APPLY

FAA LICENSE ONBOARDING
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEGALLY FLY AND APPLY?

Getting licensed can seem daunting at first, but Hylio is here to streamline it for you. We have successfully helped hundreds of customers with this process so far. We provide you with a clear roadmap, documentation, and unlimited consulting to help you get everything you need to legally fly and apply.

THE BIG THREE

FAA PART 107

This is essentially a UAS pilot license that is required in the USA to fly any UAS for commercial purposes; this covers the commercial operation of spray drones, but also camera drones, survey drones, and more.

You obtain this license by completing a 60 question, multiple-choice exam at an FAA-approved testing site. You can either self study or take an affordable, online course to prepare you for the test.

FAA PART 137

The Part 137 is the FAA's, "regulation for operating drones to dispense or spray substances (including disinfectants)". This is the same legal structure that manned aviation crop-dusters (spray plane and spray helicopter pilots) need to obtain.

Hylio assists with Part 137 onboarding as a complimentary service along with your purchase of any of our UAS. Essentially, we provide thorough guides as well as blank/example documents for every step of the process. You simply need to fill out similar turn in the application documents to your local Flights Standards District Office (FSDO) and eventually FAA officials will visit you for an interview/test to finalize your application. The entire process from start to final approval can take several months. We have seen the process take as little as 2 months and as long as 12 months. Generally speaking, the sooner you start this, the better!

PESTICIDE APPLICATOR LICENSE

The EPA defines federal guidelines for the use and dispersal of economic poisons (AKA pesticides) and the agricultural departments of each state handle the administration and enforcement of these pesticide applicator licenses.

The pesticide applicator licenses come in many different flavors; at a high level, they are split between commercial and non commercial licenses. If you are only servicing your own crops/property, then you only need the noncommercial pesticide applicator license. If you service crops/property that you do not own, then you must obtain the commercial pesticide applicator license.

TRAINING

standard training (remote)

The vast majority of our customers choose to  go through our remote training course which covers everything they need to know to operate our UAS effectively and safely.

This comprehensive training comes included as a complimentary service with any purchase of our UAS.  Also, we are happy to train multiple people from your organization at once. The training is comprised of the following general steps:

‍Hylio sends you a full suite of manuals, check lists, and tutorial media for self study. You are strongly encouraged to review this material thoroughly. You’re also given access to a simulator which allows you to practice as many virtual spray applications as you want on our software, AgroSol, before you do the real thing.

After you’ve looked over the material, you’re able to schedule a live Q&A session with a Hylio UAS expert. In this session, you’re able to ask any and all questions you have about the drones themselves, operations, maintenance, etc. Typically these sessions run from 1 to 3 hours.

As an optional final step, we offer to be on a phone/video call with you for your first real flight operation so that you have a chance to ask any last minute questions or get clarification on procedures.

The entire training process usually can be accomplished within one working day. Most customers feel comfortable operating their UAS for the first time after about 5-6 hours of training and preparation.

Training topics include, but are not limited to: UAS hardware operation, UAS software operation, relevant regulations, aerial application best practices, maintenance, battery management, and safety and emergency procedures.

in Person training (optional)

If you’re the type of person that prefers face-to-face training, don’t worry, we also offer in-person training as an option. Like the standard remote training, the optional in-person training is a complimentary service that is included with any purchase of our UAS. However, please note that we do not cover travel expenses.

In-person training covers all of the same topics as the standard training would (In-person training covers all of the same topics as the standard training would (see: Standard Training - Remote), but it is done face-to-face with a Hylio UAS expert at our headquarters in Richmond, Texas.) but would simply be done face-to-face with a Hylio UAS expert at our headquarters in Richmond, Texas.

In person training sessions typically last 3-5 hours.

TAKE TO THE SKIES!

After you’ve received your UAS and training, you’re ready to begin flying and applying! You’ll have the basics covered on day one. As you continue to accrue more flight hours under your belt, you’ll become more and more efficient and productive with the UAS.
