our story

Hylio's History. First time going to a trade show

Hylio was birthed in a dorm room by a group of American students at the University of Texas at Austin in early 2015. In its early years, Hylio created enterprise-grade, custom UAS that served customers in a wide variety of sectors including agriculture, public and private research, logistics, and industrial surveying.

While we didn’t make mainstream headlines for it, Hylio conducted the first beyond-line-of-sight payload deliveries by drone in Costa Rica in 2017. By late that year, after a few years of servicing multiple sectors, Hylio decided to focus solely on the agricultural industry.

From our early agricultural projects, we had seen that food producers often had no choice but to use slow, expensive, and ineffective tools because there were no alternatives. We decided to commit ourselves to making farming safer, cheaper, easier, and more productive for growers by leveraging our autonomous UAS technology.

In order to ensure that our product was truly useful in the field, we decided to get our hands dirty. Between 2017 and 2020, Hylio operated primarily as a custom applicator; we got paid per acre, per application that we serviced. During this time, we were learning hard lessons from every crash, component failure, and software bug that we frustratingly encountered out under the blazing sun.

After three years of servicing, our teams had treated about 50,000 acres of a wide variety of crops including sugar cane, corn, soybeans, citrus fruits, rice, wheat, melons, and more. Through our experiences, we learned what worked and what didn’t. Those hard lessons led to the robust systems we offer today.

By 2020, our technology had matured significantly, transforming our spray operations into a highly profitable venture. With substantial advancements in drone reliability, we consistently treated hundreds of acres per team per day without incident. Having proven the exceptional value and reliability of our systems, we confidently began offering the technology as a turnkey solution to fellow farmers and applicators.

From 2020 to 2024, we sold hundreds of drones to a diverse range of customers, including prominent organizations like the USDA, Nutrien, Wilbur-Ellis, King Ranch, U.S. Department of State, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as farmers and agribusiness operators of all sizes across the U.S. and beyond.

In March 2024, we became the first company ever approved by the FAA for swarm operations of 55-pound-plus agricultural drones with a single operator, setting a groundbreaking precedent that unlocked revolutionary scale and productivity for the entire agricultural drone industry.

In 2025, Hylio achieved monumental strides in product innovation and manufacturing excellence. We unveiled the inaugural model in our next-generation drone lineup: the ARES HYL-150. As Hylio's most powerful and productive drone to date, the ARES boasts an impressive 110-pound payload capacity for liquids or solids, enabling it to cover up to 70 acres per hour. This groundbreaking drone is just the beginning of our HYL-series AgDrones and a wave of innovative products set to launch in the near future.

Complementing these advancements, Hylio proudly completed our state-of-the-art, purpose-built drone factory on our Richmond, Texas, campus. This expansive 40,000-square-foot facility optimizes both volume and precision in production. With unprecedented capacity, we're accelerating output from hundreds to thousands of units annually, empowering farmers and industries like never before!
